The Minister of Niger-Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio has mentioned there might be no substantive board of the Niger-Delta Improvement Fee till the forensic auditors of the NDDC full their task.
Senator Akpabio whereas briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt, mentioned this in response to calls by the South-South Governors Discussion board on the Federal authorities to cease all funds to the NDDC till a Board is set-up.
Chairman of the South-South Governors Discussion board and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa mentioned it was worrisome that the working of the NDDC in over a 12 months by the Interim Caretaker Committee, “doesn’t augur effectively for the individuals of the Niger Delta.
However Senator Akpabio in response mentioned he was not against the structure of a substantive Board for the NDDC.
He, nonetheless, defined that organising a board in the course of the investigation will compromise the forensic audit, including that South-South Governors themselves requested for the audit.
“Let me first let you know that we’ve got appealed to Governors to make sure that Native authorities councils have elected Executives. Some Governors for eight years use Caretaker Committees to run Native governments and the Federal authorities didn’t deny them funds.
“We’re not towards the formation of a Board for the NDDC but when in 19 years they might not construct the NDDC Headquarters. They may not even use a mere N16 million to attach the outdated NDDC workplace on Aba Highway to the Nationwide grid. That’s to let you know that the structure of Boards typically has misplaced priorities.
“However we’re saying that there could be a formation of Board for the NDDC however we’ve got to first end the forensic audit. Let me let you know, Boards have varied pursuits; in case you are a contractor and you may nominate any individual into the Board, don’t you suppose the individual will battle with the forensic auditors?
“In just a few months the forensic audit might be over and a Board will certainly be inaugurated for the NDDC. It doesn’t want combating or Governors calling on the President to represent a Board.
“Slightly, the Governors ought to think about conducting Native Authorities elections and never Native authorities bulletins,” Akpabio mentioned.
